Galaxy S6 may get exclusive version of Snapdragon 810

The Samsung Galaxy S6 might get a special version of the Snapdragon 810 that runs a little cooler than the standard one.

After concerns that the Snapdragon 810 runs a bit too hot, the Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung may get a custom version of Qualcomm's flagship mobile CPU for the Galaxy S6.

While there has been no confirmation that this mystery custom chip is indeed here to combat the reported overheating issue, it could be a reaction the fear that issues with the standard Snapdragon 810 could cause Samsung to go "all-Exynos" for its next flagship.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 comes in both Exynos and Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset versions, used to provide for different territories.

Little and large

The Snapdragon 810 mines an architecture style we've seen for a while in the Exynos line.

It uses a big.LITTLE core layout, with Cortex-A57 cores for power and lower-key Cortex-A53 cores when not all that much raw power is needed.

LG has recently spoken up about claims the Snapdragon 810 is prone to overheating, having decided to use the chipset in its LG G Flex 2.

"I am very much aware of the various concerns in the market about the [Snapdragon] 810, but the chip's performance is quite satisfactory. I don't understand why there is a issue over heat," said LG Vice President Woo Ram-chan.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 not using a Snapdragon chipset would be bad news for Qualcomm, the Galaxy S series having used the CPU line since the Galaxy S4.
