Rumours suggest the Sony Xperia Z5 is the flagship we've been waiting for

Sony's only just announced the Xperia Z4, but it's never too early for Xperia Z5 rumours, especially given what a modest upgrade the Z4 is.

The good news is that if these rumours are to be believed the Xperia Z5 could not only be a worthy successor to the Xperia Z3, but may even feature a much-needed redesign.

That's the impression Twitter tipster Ricciolo has given anyway, in a post claiming that a new Sony flagship will have a new design/identity as well as a new camera, sensor, lens and software.

The words Xperia Z5 are never used, but what else could it be really? Whatever it is the wait might not be too long, as Ricciolo also writes '#futureflagnotthatfar'.

As well as those words a blurred image is attached, showing a scene selection menu, with a sunset photo taken under 'Normal' settings and on 'Sunrise & Sunset HDR' mode. It doesn't reveal much, but it adds weight to the claims.

Those aren't the only Xperia Z5 rumours flying around either, as we may even have seen a shot of the new phone, though it's er, questionable to say the least. An image found on Weibo by Mobilissimo.ro shows the back of a Sony branded device listed as the Z5, but details are so hard to make out that it could be almost anything.

There are a few things to take away from it though. For one it looks like it has a metallic edge, just like the Xperia Z4. It also looks to have a fairly small camera lens in the top left corner, which suggests that it may not have optical image stabilisation.

Alongside the image there was a mention of a USB Type C port, which wouldn't be much of a surprise and also the words '9 month', which likely suggests a September release. That would at least line up with Ricciolo's claims that we don't have long to wait and fit with the roughly six month gap we typically see between Sony flagships.

Amidst all these Xperia Z5 rumours there have also been hints that we might see a Sony Xperia Z4 Compact, as smhn.info got hold of a leaked accessory listing from Japanese mobile network NTT DoCoMo, which includes mention of an Xperia Z4 Compact.

Sadly no image accompanies it, but as well as the name we get the model number of SO-04G, which is very similar to the SO-02G-packing Xperia Z3 Compact. Of course given that the Xperia Z4 is seemingly Japan-only we wouldn't hold our breath for the Z4 Compact making it west either.
