Sony quietly launches the Xperia Z4 in Japan

Sony has been trying to keep its Xperia Z4 hand close to its chest for months, despite leaks revealing almost every aspect of the phone.

But today, the consumer electronics giant laid its cards out on the table, officially announcing its next-generation Xperia device for the Japanese market.

While we know that the phone will arrive on Japanese shelves "later this summer", at this stage there's no word on when we'll see the handset arrive internationally.

Spec-tacular

It's coming with a 5.2-inch, 1920 x 1080 screen, and a polished aluminium frame and 6.9mm thick glass body, the Z4 doesn't branch too far from the previous Xperia handset design ethos.

There's a 20.7-megapixel rear camera partnered with a 5.1-megapixel front-facing selfie (or "Selphy" according to Sony) camera, with the latter having a nice 25mm wide-angle focal length and digital image stabilisation.

As expected, the Xperia Z4 is all about keeping unpleasant moisture and dirt out, with an IPX5/8 water rating and IPX6 dustproof rating.

Powering the phone is a 64-bit octacore 2.0GHz Snapdragon 801, and Sony is continuing its push into high-res audio with support for wireless HD audio streaming.

The 2930mAh battery is accompanied by 32GB of on-board storage, expandable MicroSD card slot and the phone will launch in four colours: White, black, copper and aqua green.
